THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRAVELLING AND A HOLIDAY
The difference between travelling and a holiday. It’s safe to say I get a fair bit of stick for “going on holiday so often” but that couldn’t be further from reality.
IT IS OFTEN SAID YOU NEED A HOLIDAY AFTER TRAVELLING
I do many things when on the road but having sunbed naps, sandy toes and mojito breath are severally lacking.
HOLIDAYS
There are infact many differences between travelling and going on holiday. A holiday which the majority of people who have never travelled tend to do in one or 2 locations, less strenuous and generally more chilled out. Staying in a villa or hotel in Bali for a week or heading to a city for the weekend would both be considered as holidays. There is a low likelihood that things could go wrong during these trips and you are all but guaranteed all the home away from home comforts you need.
Nothing could go wrong
Impossible for things to go wrong
Low likelihood of things could go wrong

TRAVELLING
Time and effort even before a trip
Travelling however is much more intense, even from the moment you begin to plan your trip. It could take me several months to a year to properly plan a trip so its understandable why so many people are put off by it.

TRAVELLING ISN’T…
- 5***** hotels
- Michelin star restaurants
- One click holidays
- All-inclusive resort breaks
- Pool breaks and cocktails
Whether you decide to travel somewhere off the beaten path or somewhere closer to home, if your trip includes several locations, constant state of unbalance, a complete lack of R&R and facing new challenges on the daily then you can be sure you are travelling. But as they say “to see the view, you have to climb the mountain.”

TRAVELLING IS…
- Time consuming
- Frustrating
- Uncertain
- Tiring
- Arguing in a foreign language when you don’t understand a word
WHY TRAVEL THEN?
At this stage you might wonder why someone would go travelling but being able to experience the weird and wonderful on a daily basis and discovering more about yourself makes it all worthwhile and once you do discover that then you’ll rarely go for a holiday again. But that’s a conversation for another day.

TRAVELLING IS ALSO…
- Once in a lifetime experiences
- Exploring unique places
- Meeting amazing people
WHY HOLIDAY THEN?
I would be lying if I said travelling is the only way. Don’t get me wrong, I love a mojito and a chill on the beach as much as anyone but there is a time and a place and for me its every July in Portugal…bliss! Travelling is so time consuming and intense that it can very often be tiring, I quickly learned this after my 2 year trip!

BALANCE
But it’s up to you how intense you wish these trips to be. Because I have work commitments I like to do as much as possible in the shortest time which means I rarely get a chance to sit and chill. During my recent trip I had several free days built into my trip where I could chill or get caught up on some work, this was a game changer!. Looking back now I would suggest everyone to factor this in on a trip otherwise fatigue gets the better of you. You have to have time to sit and reflect what you are experiencing otherwise I find these amazing experiences become a distant memory and something that feels like it hardly happened.
If you are ever like my family when they travel with me and get overcome with mental and physical fatigue then you know its times to come home and have a holiday!

FINAL THOUGHTS
How you want to see the world is all a personal preference, define it as you wish but travel as much as possible in the way that suits yourself.
SAFE TRAVELS, DS x
