CONSTANTINE – MARSEILLE

It’s just as well I don’t mind all these early mornings as its up at the crack of dawn to catch my flight to Marseille. It was an absolute shame to only get a one full day in Constantine as it was exactly the type of place I enjoy but thats what happens when you bring a drone to Algeria.

Another amusing breakfast experience this morning. I knew I was checking out early so I was sure to ask the girl at reception if breakfast would be on before I leave. She assured me yes no problem, you can get breakfast at the bar from 6am as the buffet doesn’t open until 7:30.

WHERE IS MARSEILLE?

BREAKFAST

So in the morning I was directed to the bar and walked over to a single basket of biscuits. Personally I thought it was a joke but when I burst out laughing the fella didn’t seem to understand. I do like my biscuits however but its 6am and having a decent meal before you travel is essential! Credit to the gentleman who was working though who got me access to the resto. My guide and driver were punctual as ever and after leaving a comment in their little book of memoirs it was off to Marseille.

FRENCH CITIES

I’ve been to so many French cities; Paris, Toulouse, Lyon, Bordeaux and Biarritz that I get confused about them. They all have their similarities but at the same time each one of them offers something unique. With its laid back atmosphere and coastal lifestyle I found it hard to believe that Marseille was actually a city.

You aren’t short of things to do here either; Explore Fort Saint-Jean, check out the Museum of Civilizations, take a boat to Château d’If or simply just walk promenade and admire the beaches. Not a bad selection for a city!

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Needless to say most of my time was spent getting around on the Lime bikes as time was precious. Along with the highlights above, Marseille also has its fair share of quiant tree lined streets, cafes, bars and cathedrals, if that kinda thing floats your boat.

Along with Bordeaux I would be recommending Marseille to anyone. Sure it doesn’t offer what Paris does in terms of its famous landmarks nor does it offer a coast quite like the South but overall it offers a mix of almost everything.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Generally people don’t enjoy layovers but this is a perfect example of finding somewhere new and exciting that I probably wouldn’t have visited otherwise. So next time you have a layover, make a day of it!
