AZERBAIJAN
Arriving in Baku. Flying out of Dublin and the one time I am actually early for my flight it ends up being delayed!
YARPAQ ISN’T THE BEST TRADITIONAL FOOD I’VE HAD
WHERE IS AZERBAIJAN?
FINAL CALL
Fast forward a few hours and I typically made it for final call and the last one on. Just assumed everyone around me was for the same flight but turned out only 10 people were on the plane. More luck was that I was put directly behind a crying baby who was being looked after by his dad but the stewardess soon had the little boy content
SAHIL HOSTEL
Arrived at Baku and checked into Sahil Hostel. There was a Pakistan guy who was busy putting in a complaint about his stay. His issue – he’s in a mixed dorm but no girls, unbelievable! He even had the cheek to ask the reception to put the next one who checks in into his room! That aside the hostel was pretty good, had everything you needed plus a small workout station which was a bonus.
YARPAQ
As the day was getting on I only had time for a quick walk around and dinner. Dolma (yarpaq – meat wrapped in leaf) and Plov (rice and meat with pomegranate) are famous in this region but it’s safe to say I won’t be bringing no recipe books home.
This goes for the wine as well, I could barely take a sip of it without choking (sorry but I can only be honest!). I didn’t have the same courage to be honest to the waiter and told him I loved the meal.
Unfortunately he must’ve thought I was a good liar and said come back tomorrow and have the lamb and went off on a tangent about how good it was. Spoiler alert – I went to a different restaurant away from the tourist hotspots
