PUERTO MADRYN – CAPE HORN – USHAIA

WHERE IS CAPE HORN?

Cape Horn on the Cruise to the end of the world

PUERTO MADRYN

After a day at sea we arrived at Puerto Madryn where we explored the town and visited a farmers yard to help with the sheering of some sheep.  We also headed to the shore for a visit to the Sea Lion colony before searching for some free Wi-Fi, something that the cruise charges $30 a for!

DAY AT SEA

Previously the days at sea could be spent sun bathing outside or in the pool when the temperature picked up but as we travel further south it becomes too cold. After an insane 14 days on the road, these days turned out to be a great opportunity to relax, recharge and finally beat my dad at whist!

CAPE HORN

Leaving Puerto Madryn we had another 2 days at sea but the second was the highlight of the trip and the reason why many sign up to this cruise. Cape Horn is special, not only because it is the most isolated place in the Americas but also due to the way it looks. With its jagged cliffs and windswept shores there is no better setting to showcase the collision between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Every guest made their way to the front of the ship to enjoy the sailing and the commentary. The sea was typical active and as each “hold on to your hat wave” hit the front of the ship, a chorus of “yehaws” were shouted by the passengers. This was short lived which meant we could get outside and enjoy some photos without fear of being thrown overboard.

It’s special moments like these when I think of who else would have enjoyed such an occasion, my Granda Jack.

USHUAIA

Our first time off the boat in almost 3 days has us in Ushuaia, the most southernly city in the world. In the summer, daylight can last for as long as 18 hours and in the winter it can be equally as dark. Even the port was impressive here as the snow capped mountains could be seen from the comfort of your own bed.

We signed up for the Train of the End of the World which sounds hella dramatic and didn’t quite live up to it’s name. However in Ushuaia you really need to get off the beaten path to do anything special. Unfortunately this would require 2 days at least. It wasn’t a bad experience by any stretch, the scenery was impressive and the train stopped near to Correo del fin del mundo, the world’s most southern Post Office

Here we enjoy a short walk down the coast before making our way back to the cruise.
