THE SOUTHERN AMERICAN SERIES PT10

IGUAZU FALLS – MONTEVIDEO – PUNTA DEL ESTE

I was half way through my South American adventure and had met with my parents and sister in Buenos Aires. We wanted to try something different here and we had decided to take a cruise around the southern part of Latin America.

THIS CRUISE WAS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED AFTER 14 MONTHS OF TRAVELLING

As the south of the continent is as far off the beaten path as you’ll see, it can be a little hard to get around. So a cruise seemed to be the best choice. If anything it gave me a break from sorting out an itinerary!

WHERE IS IGUAZU FALLS?

IGUAZU FALLS

Before setting off on our cruise we spent a few days at Iguazu, checking out both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides, hard to know which is better. We stayed at the Belmont Hotel which is one of the better hotels in the area and has without doubt the best location. We had dinner at the front one evening and could enjoy watching the falls eating our scallops at the same time!

The falls themselves were impressive and due to the size meant there was so much to see and so many viewpoints to visit. There is a path and a boardwalk which goes around either side of the falls as well as a view point right up close.

SPEED BOAT

It’s one thing seeing the falls from above or afar but a completely unique experience is seeing them from below. I had us sign up to do the speed boat tour which takes you into the mist of the falls, nothing gives you a better judge of scale than this. Yes you get soaked but everyone is in such good form, it was worth it for the craic alone!

MONTEVIDEO

After leaving Buenos Aires we had our first stop in Uruguay, in Montevideo. Anyone who likes their food or has been to South America will know they are crazy about their steaks. As a family of foodies we take any opportunity going for some good food and naturally spent most of our time in Mercado el Puerto. Here you could enjoy all the local food you could wish for but we were really here for the steaks.

PUNTA DEL ESTE

Our second and last stop in Uruguay was at the seaside town of Punta del Este where we spent the day chilling out and enjoying the sun. This would end up being the best days weather of our trip and the only day on the beach, so it was great to take advantage.
