THE SOUTHERN AMERICAN SERIES PT8

TWO BROTHERS, RIO

After the incredible surprise of yesterday I made a second attempt at climbing the mountain, Two Brothers peak. It has been something I have been super keen on for a while and was top of my list for things to do in Rio.

POSSIBLY BETTER THAN YESTERDAYS HIKE!

I know I always say I’m not big into my hiking but I am up for anything that I am strongly rewarded for at the summit. And if the photos are anything to go by on social media then this is sure to be a winner.

WHERE IS TWO BROTHERS?

I was sharing a dorm with a Jason and his girlfriend Chloe who to be fair were a right laugh and always keen to get themselves out there. I had told Jason about my hike yesterday and said he has to join me tomorrow for the Two Brothers peak. Chloe isn’t a huge fan of hiking so instead just tore into us about our bromance 😂

GETTING THERE

Anyway it was an early night and it was back outside the hostel looking for a taxi. I don’t know what it is about Rio but it’s a huge city, huge! But for the life of me I couldn’t find a single taxi so we walked. Its only a 10minute walk to the bottom of the Vidigal Favela where you wait for a motorbike taxi to take you up.

The hike is quite popular so motorbike taxis are expecting the tourists to be here every morning. I think one fella had the monopoly as he seemed to be the only bike doing runs. Even with a queue of people you never really wait longer than 10 minutes.

MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

Once dropped off the guy will point you in the direction of the hike. It took us a while to find it but after a quick search around we hopped a wall and made our way. It’s such a strange start to a hike. Being just 5 minutes from Copacabana and in the middle of a favela you would expect every last inch to be built on. But the hike is through dense shrubs, you feel that the centre of Rio would be the last place you are.

THE OPENING

The hike is a short one and almost 30 minutes should see you to the top but its tough if you plan on running it. We were short for time so made a beeline and as we got there we were met with the most incredible opening I have seen.

THE VIEW

Rio has so much to see from it’s viewpoints, hence the popularity of Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer. But the view here is completely unique. You can see it all while the sunrises above the Atlantic. Within the space of 24 hours (after yesterday’s hike) I was in awe again but this time there was no rush and we could chill for some of my favourite photos ever.

The beauty of this hike is how close it is to the city centre and how short it is to climb. Copacabana, Ipanema, Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf are just a few of the sights you can see from up here.

GETTING BACK

Rio has so much to see from up high, hence the popularity of sugarloaf mountain and Christ the Redeemer. But the view here is completely unique. FINAL THOUGHTS

I did not expect anything as good as this in Rio. Even if I came to Rio just to do this hike then it would have still been worth it. I can’t wait to get back and do it again!
