THE THAILAND SERIES, DAY 8
RAILAY BEACH – AO NANG
Rock climbing on Railay Beach. It’s been 6 years since I visited Vietnam and 6 years since I done a bit of rock climbing and I loved every minute of it out in Ha Long Bay.
FINGER THE WHITE HOLES, DAVID.
Railay Beach is world famous for its rock climbing and people are known to travel here for it alone so it would be rude not to dip my toe in again!
WHERE IS AO NANG?
Ao Nang
MEMORIES
One thing I do remember about the rock climbing in Vietnam is my grip getting tighter and tighter the higher I went and the precarious places you were expected to put your feet and grip with your hand, it was a shock.
The first few climbs (near the viewpoint) were doable and got me back in the rhythm but each climb got higher and more difficult. Especially when we moved across the bay, which doubled the ascent.
DAILY INFO….
- HOTEL – Railay Bay Resort 6.5/10
- RESTAURANT – Raylay Beach Cafe Restaurant
- FOOD – Pad KraPhao
- ATTRACTIONS – Rock climbing
FRUSTRATION
The first one was high but again doable but the last one was all but impossible. Getting to the last 3 metres I had no idea where to put my hand or foot and the energy soon zapped out of me.
The instructor wasn’t helping either, asking me to just finger the white holes (those that are chalked) but because most have been rubbed to a shine the entire cliff face looked white.
DAILY TRAVEL STATS….
- Steps – 10,200
FREE CLIMBING
I have a new found respect for anyone who does this unaided, it’s incredible especially what Alex Honnold and Adam Ondra achieved at El Capitan. Go rock climbing and then watch the doc Free Solo, you will be lost for words.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Having rock climbed in Vietnam several years ago I had half a ‘grasp’ even though it was fairly difficult. Little did I know it would a be walk in the park compared to todays effort. Still, great day.
NEXT UP
A quick hike to Railay Viewpoint and then off to Ao Nang for the best Tom Yum and another hike to Tiger Temple!! Click to read.
