THE OIL SERIES, DAY 9-11

QATAR

Key Takeaway

Doha airport completely redefined my layover experience. From unexpected moments of reflection at the prayer spaces to unwinding at the swimming pool at Doha airport, complete with a gym, squash court, and massage pods, it’s clear this airport is more than just a transit point. It’s a hidden gem that made me fall in love with Doha as my new favourite layover destination. Can’t wait to return!

YOU WOULD HAVE THOUGHT YOU WERE ANYWHERE ELSE BUT AN AIRPORT

People can pray up to 5 times a day, which for me is just insane, but it seems all part of life here.

After eating some Syrian food at Damascus One, I then headed to check out the Souk to see if it was all closed. Friday is an important day of the week for Muslims, and generally shops will be closed.

THINGS TO DO

When it comes to things to do in Doha, there isn’t an endless list, and something the government is trying to work on. One thing I would recommend is the walk along the Corniche, which connects the old town to the new city, offering incredible views of possibly the best cityscape you will ever see.

The buildings are one thing, but the colour of the water is another. Skyscrapers and Coral Reefs are not something you often see together.

SOUK

Later in the night, I headed back to the Souk to meet a friend who contacted me on Instagram, Demi. The Souk has everything, from kittens to carpets to falcons and gold; it’s definitely worth exploring in the country of Qatar.

TOMORROW

The next day, I jumped on the Doha bus for a tour of the city. There wasn’t one other person on the bus, so I pretty much had my own driver the entire trip. I had already explored a bit of the city, so I ventured out to The Pearl, which is a man-made island just north of West Bay.

THE PEARL

For me, it’s not as nice as the rest of the city, but the real attractions can be found on the way. The new city is something spectacular to drive through. I honestly felt like a kid in a sweet shop, and then, after, you might be lucky to catch a glimpse of the royal houses, which almost span the entire length of the road from West Bay to The Pearl.

The pearl itself, however, is mainly built up with hotels and blocks of unflattering apartments. Time here is spent shopping in the countless designer stores, boutiques, supercar showrooms, or on your Super Yacht.

BACK TO THE AIRPORT

After another evening in the souk, it was time to head to the airport. My flight was in the early hours of the morning, so I had made plans to get there 6 hours early, check in, and spend the rest of the time at the Spa.

Now, before I get into the spa details, there was a slight issue: check-in would open until 2 hours before my flight! This meant I had a period of 4 hours to kill at the check-in area, no less, before I could go on through, not ideal, David 🤣

THE AIRPORT SPA

Another issue on this part was that I purposely hadn’t showered as I knew I would be getting on at the airport, but would I really want to pay £50 for the privilege of the spa for only 1 hour, damn right!!

If there is one thing I can’t deal with (if I can help it), then it’s feeling dirty before travelling. But regardless, I checked in and went straight up to the spa, passing every already full business lounge on the way.

TIPS….

  • Bring swimming trunks.
  • They will supply paper trunks, but only for the jacuzzi.
  • Bring gym gear, trainers not essential.

My flight home was almost issue free until we were in Istanbul where our plane decided to rid itself of all its oil.

FACILTIES

I had been here before and wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to return, so I got there as quickly as I could. The first thing you will notice at Doha airport is a swimming pool (bring swimming trunks), which leads to a gym, squash court, and virtual golf. I’m not sure of too many airports that offer half that, but that’s not it.

There is a jacuzzi in each changing room, massage pods, shower facilities, and all the toiletries you might need. For me, it is the perfect way to prepare for a 3-flight home – but spend longer than 1 hour!
