THE HAWAII & ASIA SERIES PT13

ELLA – MIRISSA – GALLE – COLOMBO

Unfortunately, the train wasn’t an option today and as I am leaving for the Maldives in a few days and wanted to get down to Mirissa asap!

I DID NOT EXPECT BEACHES LIKE THIS IN SRI LANKA!

The bus is never ideal but it’s cheap and gets you there and besides, a few hours in a hot and humid bus was worth it for a few days at Mirissa Beach.

WHERE IS MIRISSA?

JJ’S HOSTEL

I checked into JJ’s, a decent hostel just 5 minutes walk from the beach. For me it’s the only hostel I would stay at. The facilities are modern and rooms clean and spacious with various common areas inside and out.

MIRISSA

The town of Mirissa is still relatively quiet but you can see the expansion of hotels and restaurants fronting onto the beach. Saying that the beach was still empty and would challenge any of those in Thailand

GALLE

On my way up to Colombo I decided to stop off at Galle, a quaint little seaside town famous for its Portuguese architecture, fort and cricket. Time here was best spent walking around the small peninsula and enjoying one of my favourite sunsets over the Indian Ocean. I remember having an incredible prawn dish and wanted to know how it was cooked, you could probably understand the shock I got when the chef brought out a tub of Mae Ploy paste!

COLOMBO

I made sure that I was back on the train for my final trip to Colombo (Bunkyard) and spent the few hours hanging out the carriage and enjoying every last minute of it. I had 1 night here before an insane few days in the Maldives.

As thought the beach town of Mirissa lived up to the hype and even after just spending a week in Sri Lanka it is quite easily one of my favourite countries. Visit asap as the tourists are closing in!
