THE EAST AFRICAN SERIES, DAY 29

Zanzibar

Worst food with the best view at The Rock, Zanzibar. The plan was never to visit the rock and expect Michelin star food, we knew well that it wasn’t amazing.

TWO OUT OF FOUR MAIN COURSES REMAINED UNATE

But even our floored expectations were miles ahead of what we would end up tucking into.

WHERE IS THE ROCK?

The Rock

THE ROCK

It’s important to plan the rock when the tide is in, it makes the entire experience a little better when you have to get a small boat just 20 metres to the steps. However, whatever way the tides were working this week, the high tide just didn’t happen.

When arriving you can see how impressive it looks and why it has found itself all over Instagram and gotten a real name for itself. It has to be one of the most famous restaurants in the world and for sure in all of Zanzibar.

DAILY INFO….

  • HOTEL – Breezes Beach Bar
  • FOOD – horrendous @ The Rock
  • ATTRACTIONS – The Rock, Beach time
  • STEPS – 8,100

BACK TERRACE

Arriving early we settled into the back terrace for a drink and a cigar and enjoyed the views while picking our way through the generally decent menu. There is just no other restaurant like it, it was seriously pure bliss!

FLAG….

  • GREEN – Represents the vegetation
  • BLACK – Represents the people.
  • BLUE – Represents the ocean.
  • YELLOW – Represents the riches.
  • The national flag of Tanzania in the canton.

FOOD

We then moved to the side terrace where our food was waiting and I think it was even before the food touched our lips that we knew how things were going to end up.

My carpaccio looked like someone had spilt milk on it and the others around me didn’t look much better. Dad ate one piece of his very tough beef salad, mum ate most of her disappointing battered prawn/squid and Vicki ate all of her fish fingers.

MAINS

Again my mains was very edible; lobster tomato sauce and couscous but how can you go wrong! Dad on the other hand couldn’t eat his and vicki the same because it was so sweet, to beat Vicki on a dish that is even too sweet for her is some going! Mum ate her lobster but you cannot go wrong with grilled lobster, she had a bit more sense!

It’s hard to forget the food when it’s that bad but the setting is just so unique and instead we settled into a few G&Ts for sunset. Which reminds me, don’t expect to see too much of the sunset as it sets behind the west coast of the island but still leaves for a charming view.

FINAL THOUGHTS

It’s hard to recommend these kinds of experiences to people when it contrasted so much. But if you could visit with an open mind rather than an empty stomach you’ll be glad you made the visit. Also book a taxi yourself rather than getting charged x4 times as much from the hotel.
