THE HAWAII & ASIA SERIES PT1

NEW YORK, U.S.

I had just had a brilliant two weekends in London sandwiched either side of 2 weeks around Europe.

THE 9/11 MUSEUM WAS A HIGHLIGHT YET GAVE ME MIXED EMOTIONS

Now it was time to get back on the road and make my way to Hawaii but first I had a few places I wanted to revisit.

WHERE IS NEW YORK?

MISSED FLIGHT

Typically, I missed my flight back to New York and had to sleep in the airport for the next one. Sleeping in airports LINK has become part of my travels and I don’t mind it, I just find a spot to sleep and get on with it!

NEW YORK

I’ve been to New York a few times and generally just went with the flow but since my last visit I had compiled a list of things I really wanted to do. You won’t need me to tell you that New York is a cool city that offers almost everything. I was only here for a few days and struggled to fit everything in, it was hectic!

TIMES SQUARE

I arrived in the evening a caught up with my old friend, Cami who I met in Sao Paulo. Times square is quintessential New York and is usually at the top of everyone’s list when they visit. It’s chaotic but hard not to love. Keep an eye out for the dodgy CD sellers and hotdogs!

9/11 MEMORIAL

After a quick trip in the rain to the Brooklyn Bridge and a recharge at the famous Kats Delicatessen it was off to the 9/11 museum which gave me a host of mixed emotions. I enjoyed it, found it every interesting and learned a lot but yet it’s hard not to forget that 3,000 people died in this very spot. There are a lot of items and artefacts that have been recovered, the most notable being a fire engine that was crushed and two of the existing columns have also been retained.

The actual memorial which is outside, consists of two waterfall pools in the footprint of the Twin Towers. Each of these are surrounded by bronze parapets that list the names of the victims. On their birthday, a flower is placed within the victim’s name.

THE DEAD RABBIT

Voted the best bar in the world and owned by 2 men from my own city, Belfast, the Dead Rabbit is a surprisingly small and understated bar. When I visited there was only 7 other people in the main bar and meant getting a seat and served was no problem. It’s a typical bar without being tacky or over the top, something not many Irish bars achieve, believe me, I’ve been in one or two.

STATUE OF LIBERTY

The Statue of Liberty is one of many iconic structures of NYC and is seen in almost every photo. I was surprised that by the amount of times I have visited I still hadn’t made it here. There was so much more to see than just the statue itself. Ellis immigration was the busiest U.S. immigration station with over 12 million immigrants passing through in the early 1900s.
