Saharan sands meets Atlantic Ocean
Bonjour, and welcome to Mauritania. This west-coast North African country should be visited with caution at the moment, as the political situation in the area is dicey. It was once a part of ancient Burber Mauretanea, along with Morocco, and that’s where it gets its name from. This is a largely desert country, with 90% of its land made up of Saharan sands. Though the Berber people have long wandered the desert as nomads, these days most of Mauritania’s population is in the more fertile south. For history buffs, the Libraries of Chinguetti hold thousands of ancient manuscripts, but for the most part this isn’t somewhere tourists flock. If you’re an adventurer, and you want to dive into the depths of the Sahara and explore ancient Berber culture, then VISIT MAURITANIA.
