THE OIL SERIES, DAY 5
SUDAN
The best fish & learning English. I was in 2 minds today, I really could decide what I wanted to do. Visit the pyramids or continue to check out the city.
THE BEST COOKED FISH I’VE HAD
Its an 8hr round trip to the pyramids so I figured I would only be going if I was able to stay/camp overnight which unfortunately wasn’t an option as my flight left for Iran tomorrow.
COUCHSURFING
Instead I hit up a few locals on Couchsurfing and met with Tibyan for a coffee before heading to one of the best fish restaurants I’ve been to.
FISH WOK
It was a recommendation from a friend, Daniel (who is also visiting every country) and as soon as he said it was the best fish he’d ever tried I knew I needed to go. Like most restaurants in Sudan its fairly under stated and hard to find as it is located off the main road. When arriving you could tell from its popularity it was going to be good, almost every table was taken. The staff were as I had expected in Sudan, friendly and patient. On the menu there was plenty of variety but as per my recommendations I went for the grilled Nile fish and some fried fillet.
Tagalia & Mullah are traditional Sudanese foods, try them!
TENDER
To this day I am not sure I’ve had fried food that was cooked as well as that, it blew my mind. The taste was also great but you don’t need to do a lot to fish when you are cooking it. After some local lemonade and Arabic coffee I made my way to meet another local from Couchsurfing. Instead though I had got his information form another friend (another Daniel) and Ismail was more than happy to meet but already had plans at a English language class. That was until he ask me to join.
ENGLISH CLASS
I was keen to join for the evening and to meet more Sudanese but I was not keen on them learning from me so I had to lose the accent and the slang, hard to do if you know me! The class was excellent and one of my highlights here as it gave me a chance to get to know each of them as well as some background to life is Sudan and their thoughts on it.
FINAL THOUGHTS
It wasn’t even difficult, Sudan will go down as one of the friendliest places I have been to, the best compliment I can give!
