Guinea-Bissau

Colonial Portugese history meets nature so unique it’s a protected biosphere

Ola, welcome to Guinea-Bissau, named after the British gold Guinea and yet historically a Portugese colony. Guinea-Bissau used to be a big centre of gold mining, and these days it’s all about cashews! The food here has a Portugese twist, and the seafood is particularly great. The Bijagos Archipelago is a protected biosphere reserve, and if you’re even half-interested in nature it’s a must-see. The old colonial towns and the capital city, Bissau, are crumbling and beautiful, and carry the weight of a colonial history that ended in bitter struggle. If you want to see steamy jungle encroaching on white sand beaches, and maybe encounter a saltwater hippo, then VISIT GUINEA-BISSAU!
