DAY 15 KIWI EXPERIENCE
THE NEVIS SWING
The biggest canyon swing in the world is the perfect aftershock along with the Nevis Bungee. Next up was the Nevis swing which is basically a 300m swing from 1 side of the valley to the other. I’m doing it with Anna, a German girl who was quietly confident on the bungy.
By this stage I had only just done my first bungee a few days before but after enjoying it so much I felt we all needed the same adrenaline hit ASAP! Being part of the Kiwi Experience you meet so many people at different times and in Queenstown I met up with a few old friends from up the coast. As they had already been here for a few days they had recommended to do a Swing.
DAVE 0 – NEVIS SWING 1
WHERE IS THE NEVIS SWING?
The biggest canyon swing in the world
Now with Queenstown being Queenstown there was a choice of 2; the 200m canyon swing or the 300m Nevis swing. We obviously all agreed to hit up the Nevis swing as we wouldn’t have time for both! The swing can be done solo, tandem, forward facing, backwards, upside down, 69…you get the point, I love Queenstown!!
Anyway there was a group of 6 of us, slightly worse for wear after experiencing the Queenstown nightlife. I joined Anna, a top girl from Germany who like the rest of the group I met on the bus. We went for the tandam backward option.
DID YOU KNOW….?
- The Nevis Swing is the biggest canyon swing in the world
- 300m Arc
- 70m Freefall
- The Nevis swing costs $225 (transport included) for an adult but deals can be done to match this up with the Nevis Bungee.
I was always told about how much the instructors try and mess with the people’s heads if they appear over confident so I told them to ‘look after her’ and gave a subtle wink 😉 If you are genuinely struggling they can be reassuring but whats the fun in that! They don’t like to be challenged so after trying to physic us out I asked if that was all they had, you can see Anna in the video go mental! They had a long look at her harness as if it wasn’t done properly. Once we were strapped in, dangling over the canyon and beyond the point of no return then it was time to have a little fun with your emotions.
COMING OFF WORSE
They and you both know you aren’t able to simply back out. The guys have a button they press when they want to release you and after hearing a lot of these stories I told them I was ready whenever they decide to press it. I even took it in myself to play with Anna’s anxiety but she was finding it amusing. It was all to distract me from the fact I was shitting it.
That being said I thought I had the guy figured out and to be fair he thought the same. but he had us dangling for a good 5 minutes until the exact moment I relaxed and let my guard down where I was almost 300metres away in the flash of an eye. These guys sure know what they are doing, he said in cases like that he just takes his time and sooner or later the people on the swing lose focus and that’s exactly what happened. From the moment you are released you just cant prepare yourself for what happens, the speed it all happens is incredible! Nevis 1 – David 0
DID YOU KNOW….?
- It is as the same location at the Nevis Bungee and can be bought as part of a package
- You can swing alone or with a friend
- Options include, front facing, backwards, upside down, 69 and tandem
Tomorrow I had planned to do Milford Sound which is apparently a contender for the 8th wonder of the world (if I had a penny for every time I heard that around the world). Problem is I also want to drink tonight with a few old friends arriving today and don’t fancy the 8hr return journey and boat trip. A few girls in my dorm went today and the weather was terrible and they weren’t too fussed about it afterwards. Turns out it’s one of the wettest places in NZ. They showed me a few photos and it didn’t sell it so I have a decision to make and I am getting drunk tonight instead, The Milford Sound is going to be around a lot longer than everyone else on the bus so it will have to wait for another time!
Needless to say the instructors delivered the goods and managed to turn it into both an exhilarating and funny experience! Fair play to Anna who was more than up to the challenge and also for taking my shit during it, what better way to do an experience like this than to share it!
I get to try the most famous burger in the world and enjoy my last few days in Queenstown, Click to read.
