I will be honest, when people heard I was heading to Lebanon, most of them raised an eyebrow. “Is it safe?” was the first thing out of almost everyone’s mouth. But that’s exactly the kind of question that makes me want to go. Lebanon was country number 100 for me.

One hundred countries. And I didn’t want to mark that milestone somewhere predictable. I wanted somewhere that would actually mean something. Beirut felt right. This is Part 3 of my Middle East & European Series, and if you have been following along since Jordan, you already know this leg of the journey doesn’t disappoint.

THE MIDDLE EAST & EUROPEAN SERIES PT 3

BEIRUT, LEBANON – LARNACA, CYPRUS

After my memorable adventures in Jordan, I was now heading to Lebanon, another country more recently involved in conflict.

FAVOURITE PAST TIME IN CYPRUS HAS TO BE PEOPLE WATCHING

I checked into Hostel Beirut, which ticked all the boxes I needed, as well as a discounted gym membership!

WHERE IS BEIRUT?

Lebanon & Cyprus

A WALK THROUGH BEIRUT CHANGED THE WAY I SAW LEBANON

Similar to Kosovo, I wasn’t sure what to expect here, but again, I was left impressed as soon as I started walking around. Considering its geography, it makes it all the more impressive; Lebanon borders Syria, Palestine, and Israel, 3 countries that don’t seem to ever be out of a conflict.

Along with it’s neighbours, Syria, Lebanon is said to be one of the oldest countries in Europe. Civilisation here dates back to 5000BC, predating recorded history.

STAYING IN BEIRUT

I stayed at Hostel Beirut, which was perfect for budget travel. It was clean, social, and even offered a discounted gym pass. If you are traveling cyprus to lebanon or starting your trip here, Beirut has many good-value places to stay.

I QUICKLY SAW WHY CYPRUS IS SO POPULAR

Cyprus is one of the most popular islands in Europe, and it’s easy to see why. Its pristine beaches stretch from the quieter, more laidback southern region to the party streets of Ayia Napa in the North.

I stayed at Achilleos Hotel in Larnaca during my first visit, and on the first day, I could barely see what was in front of me because of the fog.

MY TIME AT FINIKOUDES BEACH

The beach here doesn’t compete with what the rest of the island has, but it’s no slouch for a city beach. Sites in the city include the Medieval Castle of Larnaca and the Church of Saint Lazarus, which, like many religious tales, is said to contain the tomb of the saint who had risen from the dead. If you do visit here, I would suggest either the north or the southern area, but do stop and enjoy a coffee on the promenade; it’s a great place to watch people.

END OF THE TRIP!

Lebanon and Cyprus ended up being two destinations that completely exceeded my expectations. From walking through the lively streets of Beirut to relaxing along the waterfront in Larnaca, both countries made my 100th country milestone trip even more memorable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have you actually been to both Lebanon and Cyprus?
Yes, I visited Beirut, Lebanon, as part of my Middle East & European Series, and Larnaca in Cyprus. Both were part of the same travel leg, and both genuinely surprised me in the best way.

Is Beirut safe to visit as a traveller?
In my experience, I felt comfortable walking around Beirut and found it far more impressive than I expected, given its geography and its neighbours’ ongoing conflicts. That said, I did always recommend checking current travel advisories before you go, as the situation can change.

What is the best area to stay in Larnaca, Cyprus?
I stayed near Finikoudes Beach at the Achilleos Hotel, which I’d recommend for easy access to the promenade and waterfront. For more action, Ayia Napa is the party hub, while the south of the island tends to be quieter and more relaxed.

What are the must-see spots in Beirut?
From my visit, I loved wandering the marina at Zaitunay Bay, walking through the downtown area near Martyr’s Square, and soaking in the mix of old and new architecture. The vertical garden building near Hamra is also a good sight.

What is Finikoudes Beach like in Larnaca?
It’s a decent city beach, not the most spectacular on the island, but lovely for a stroll. I sit at one of the promenade cafés, order a coffee, and do what I consider the best activity in Cyprus, of course people watch.

How do Lebanon and Cyprus compare for backpackers?
I did give Lebanon a 7/10 and Cyprus a 7/10 for backpacking. Lebanon is an incredible cultural experience, but the infrastructure for budget travellers is still developing. Cyprus has more established tourist facilities and better transport, but it’s pricier. Both are very much worth visiting.
