THE DISPUTED SERIES, DAY 11
NORTHERN CYPRUS
A day in Northern Cyprus. The border crossing between Cyprus and Northern Cyprus is probably the best in the world. Your passport (EU) is checked on one side for around 10seconds then you make the short walk of around 40metres across the dead zone before getting to another checkpoint. Here it’s the same deal, a quick look at your passport and you’re on the way.
WHERE IS NORTHERN CYPRUS?
SHORT WALK BUT HUGE DIFFERENCES
Once you arrive into Northern Cyprus you immediately notice the Turkish influence. The architecture, mosques, restaurants and not to forget the countless shops offering fake goods. The selling of these fake goods surprised me. You could literally buy a fake LV Neverfull and talk to the immigration officer at the same time, they are they close!
FAMAGUSTA
I was only here for the day as it was short on time. But in hindsight should have stayed overnight. Things on this side of the border are much cheaper not to mention there is plenty to see. Deryneia is worth a visit as the viewpoint of Famagusta (Varosha). Although you can view it form either side of the border it is much better from the Northern Cyprus side.
When the unrest occurred between these two countries a green zone or buffer zone was setup which forbade anyone from entering. The only problem was that the town of Famagusta was directly in the middle. This meant everyone having to leave the town permanently, which was unfortunate as it just appears to be a huge waste!
BEACH HOPING
The next hour was spent racing between the following beaches before sunset;
Sirena Bay
Fig Tree Bay
Konnos Bay
Cape Greco
The water colour here is exceptional and on par with some of the best beaches on Croatia, it doesn’t take a genius to see why this country is so popular among tourists.
ACCOMMODATION
Checked in Marica’s boutique hotel which is for sure the best value for money I’ve ever came across! For £25 I had a 1 bed apartment, bathroom, kitchen & living area and balcony all with a sea and pool view!!
NEXT UP
I ended up back in Ayia Napa for sushi before making the 2hour trip to Paphos. Somewhere I was sure I wouldn’t get to but after researching Turtle bay I had to go and what a choice it was. Click to read.
