DUBAI & BRUSSELS

THE PHILIPPINES SERIES PT17

After spending a few days in both Bangkok and Bahrain, I was due to head back home. However, I planned a few stops along the way.

CHOCOLATE, BEER & WAFFLES IN THAT ORDER!

My best pal, Jenna, who I know from Uni in Glasgow, is currently living in Saudi. Fortunately, she happens to be in Dubai the same weekend, which is good.

DUBAI

My previous visit here was memorable. During my return trip from Oz, a friend staying on the Palm gave me a tour. Without a local contact or thorough research, navigating can be tough and pricey. This situation is definitely not ideal for a backpacker!

DESERT SAFARI

Jenna’s sister Mel was staying in a suite, so I bagged the first night on their sofa, which helped since I arrived late. Additionally, I enjoyed a free breakfast, so I could hardly complain! Later on, Jenna and I decided to go on a desert safari. These adventures, common in the Middle East, involve getting tossed around in a jeep on the sand dunes.

CAMEL RIDE

After this adventure (if you’ve made it), we had the most bizarre camel ride. We initially expected an hour’s trek, but instead, did three loops of about 20 meters! This was just enough for a few daft photos before the evening show. Following that, we watched Middle Eastern dancing, ate flatbread, drank tea, and watched the sunset over the dunes.

AQUARIUM BAR

That night, Jenna and I went to Ossiano, the underwater cocktail bar in the Atlantis. There is nothing like sipping on a cocktail while looking at a few stingrays!

Earlier that day, I had moved to Atana Hotel on the mainland. In this city, regardless of your hotel location, you need a taxi to go anywhere.

BRUSSELS

I love splitting longer flights to see new cities, so Brussels was perfect between Dubai and Portugal, where I’d meet my family.

Belgium is famous for chocolate, waffles, and beer, which made it clear how I’d spend my time. Between bar visits and the Waffle Factory, I spent time at the Grand Place, my favorite town square in Europe. The Gothic architecture, chocolate museums, and beer gardens were all impressive. Unfortunately, I only had a day here before it was time to meet the family back in Portugal.

To make the most of my brief stay, I indulged in local delicacies and soaked in the vibrant atmosphere. Despite the short visit, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment in Brussels.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I do like Dubai; however, it’s generally a resort location. It lacks a central epicenter, which would change things for me. Moreover, no hotel is close to attractions, so you’ll need a car or many taxis to get around.
