THE AZORES SERIES, DAY 3
TERCEIRA ISLAND
Let me share my travel experience on Terceira Island, which turned out to be another photographer’s dream. One of the highlights of going away for me is taking photos. I could spend weeks researching the best spots and then spend hours on-site, making sure to get the perfect shot! But with limited time to research Terceira, it was out of sheer luck that I came across the Trilhas photography tour on TripAdvisor.
A PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHER MIGHT NOW BECOME A HABIT
“Probably some basic shit,” I thought. That was until I checked the reviews and then their IG profile. Not wanting to waste any time, I sent an email requesting a sunrise-to-sunset photography tour. It was going to be a long-ass day, but my list of things to do had just tripled, and I needed all the time I could.

THIRSTY
The weather here in Terceira can be very hit-or-miss: usually warm, but rain and clouds come and go throughout the day. So when Juca picked me up, he told me to temper my expectations.
“Wow! You’ve got a thirst trap of an IG account, and now you’re asking me to chill.” The equivalent of meeting someone who posts nothing but 🍑 pics on their IG, only for them to arrive wearing a boiler suit. You know who you are 👀.
DAILY TRAVEL STATS….

HIGHLIGHT
I could go through all the places we visited, but apart from losing (and finding) my sunglasses, I’m not sure I could argue about the weather. One highlight, however, would have to be the Black Forest! You’d be forgiven for driving past it, as it looked nothing special, but this was a perfect example of why local guides were invaluable.

SUNSET
We finished our tour at Dragon’s Head, a phenomenal rock formation on the west coast. It was certainly ‘days like these’ that made me feel I underappreciated home, as the landscape could not have been more similar at times. This trip quickly turned into an unforgettable Azores travel photography experience.
FACTS:
- Terceira is home to the Azores’ oldest city, Angra do Heroísmo.
- The highest point in Terceira is 1,020m, at the summit of the extinct volcano Serra de Santa Bárbara.
- The islands consist of four stratovolcanoes.
- Terceira is built on a geologic structure called the Terceira Rift, a triple junction between the Eurasian, African, and North American tectonic plates.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Terceira isn’t far off the photographic level of the Faroes and Iceland!
