THE AZORES SERIES, DAY 3
TERCEIRA ISLAND
Terceira, another photographer’s dream. One of the highlights of going away for me is taking photos, I could spend weeks researching where the best spots are and then spend hours on site making sure to get the perfect shot! But with limited time to research Terceira, it was out of sheer luck that I came across Trilhas photography tour on Trip Advisor.
A PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHER MIGHT NOW BECOME A HABIT
“Probably some basic shit” I thought. That was until I checked the reviews and then their IG profile. Not wanting to waste any time, I sent an email requesting a sunrise to sunset photography tour, a long ass day but my list of things to do had just trebled and I needed all the time I could.
DAILY INFO….
- HOTEL – Hotel Branco II, 5.5/10, £55
THIRSTY
The weather here in Terceira can be very much hit or miss, usually warm but rain and clouds come and go throughout the day, so when Juca picked me up he told me to measure my expectations.
“Wow! You got a thirst trap of an IG account and now you’re asking me to chill.” The equivalent of a meeting someone who posts nothing but 🍑 pics on their IG only for them to arrive wearing a boiler suit. You know who you are 👀
DAILY TRAVEL STATS….
- Steps – 9,500
HIGHLIGHT
I could go through all the places we visited but apart from losing (and finding) my sunglasses I’m not sure I could argue about the weather. One highlight however would have to be the black Forrest! You’d be forgiven for driving past it as looks nothing special but this was a perfect example of why local guides are invaluable.

SUNSET
We ended up finishing our tour at Dragons head, a phenomenal rock formation on the west coast. It’s certainly “days like these” that make me feel I under appreciate home as at times the landscape could not have been more similar.
FACTS:
- Home to the Azores’ oldest city, Angra do Heroísmo.
- The highest point in Terceira is 1,020m, the summit of the extinct volcano; Serra de Santa Bárbara.
- The islands consists of 4 stratovolcanoes.
- Terceira is built over a geologic structure called the Terceira Rift: a triple junction between the Eurasian, African and North American tectonic plates.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Terceira isn’t far off the photographic level of the Faroes and Iceland!
