Rugged mountains meet lakeside resorts

Salam, and welcome to Kyrgyzstan, also known as the Kyrgyz Republic. There’s one main reason to travel here: the mountains. This part of central Asia is about as rugged as anywhere on earth, with glaciers and glacial lakes to boot. It’s best practice to hire a local guide, and camping is possible through the milder months, especially in Osh and around Karaikal. A little less expected are the resort-style towns on lake Issyk-kul, and the fledgling ski industry on some of the slopes.
