Towering minarets meet remote highland plateaus and wandering yaks

Salaam alaikum, welcome to Afghanistan. Over the last 30 years, and over its long history, Afghanistan has been a place of conflict. It has also been a place that lives in the imagination of many, from religious travellers to the traders of the silk road and adventurers of empire. Kabul is not safe to visit at present, but at its best it is a mad and ever changing city which never loses touch with its history. Its history museum in particular is wonderful, and shows everything Afghanistan has been, from Hellenistic state to Buddhist enclave through to the Islamic country it is now. The countryside is also breathtaking, from lakes to mountains to the highlands where you might meet no one but a yak herd all day. If you want to see an every changing country that has held itself up through the worst of times, then VISIT AFGHANISTAN!
