Salam, and welcome to Algeria. The largest country in Africa is just a short hop from Europe, and yet it’s a whole new world. There are the snow dappled peaks of its mountains, and the vast Saharan desert makes up the south. You’ll know the names if cities – Algiers, Constantine, because they have long been a source of fascination and have appeared in western literature and art for two centuries. You may not have heard, however, of the Roman ruins at Timgad or Djimela, despite the perfect preservation of these Roman towns.
